GREENVILLE, S.C.The mother who is accused of leaving her newborn baby in the toilet on Friday at the Bi-Lo Center in Greenville was in court Wednesday morning for a bond hearing.
Jessica Blackham, 24, was given a $30,000 surety bond by a Greenville Municipal Court judge.
She is charged with two counts of felony child abuse and one count of unlawful neglect of a child.
The baby boy is listed in serious but stable condition at a Greenville hospital.
Blackham didnt say much during the hearing. Her parents spoke on her behalf.
In a FOX Carolina exclusive interview Wednesday, Andy McAuliffe, Blackhams father, said his daughter didnt know she was pregnant.
Weve honest and forthright with the police, McAuliffe said. Weve been very careful to acknowledge that we dont know if this is Jessicas daughter. None of her family had any suspicion that she was pregnant.
In the courtroom, Blackhams parents told the judge that Blackham doesnt remember much about the events at the Bi-Lo Center on Friday night. They also said their daughter has amnesia.
On Saturday, as Blackham was at work, McAuliffe heard reports of a newborn baby found at the Bi-Lo Center. When talked to Blackham about if the baby and if she was the mother, she said, of course not.
McAuliffe took Blackham to the hospital and told staff there that her condition might be related to a baby who was born at a Bi-Lo Center. When law enforcement officers arrived, they started asking Blackham questions about the baby.
(She was) weak and aneimic, having lost a lot of blood, and (the officers) were literally around her bed and had her in tears, McAuliffe said. One was calling her a liar; the other was calling her character into question.
Police arrested Blackham on Tuesday night after she turned herself in at the police station.
Investigators said a Bi-Lo Center employee discovered the newborn baby in the womens restroom. They said they believe the baby was born there. Investigators said the child was no more than a couple of hours old when the employee found him.
McAuliffe said his daughter has no memory of what happened Friday. If it is proven through DNA tests that the baby is hers, the family will take responsibility for the child.
Blackham has been separated from her husband of five years for more than a year, her parents said. The couple has a 4-year-old child together.
