Father: I'm Not Sure 'Bi-Lo Baby' Is Daughter's 2-10-2011

GREENVILLE, S.C.The father of a woman who police said gave birth at the Bi-Lo Center on Friday night and left her newborn baby in a toilet spoke only to FOX Carolina's Adrian Acosta on Wednesday.
Jessica Blackham, 24, of Easley, turned herself in to police on Tuesday night. She was charged with unlawful neglect of a child and two counts of felony child abuse, and released on $30,000 bond.
In a FOX Carolina exclusive interview Wednesday, Andy McAuliffe, Blackham’s father, said his daughter didn’t know she was pregnant.
“We’ve been honest and forthright with the police,” McAuliffe said. “We’ve been very careful to acknowledge that we don’t know if this is Jessica’s daughter. None of her family had any suspicion that she was pregnant.”
In the courtroom, Blackham’s parents told the judge that Blackham doesn’t remember much about the events at the Bi-Lo Center on Friday night. They also said their daughter has amnesia.
On Saturday, as Blackham was at work, McAuliffe heard reports of a newborn baby found at the Bi-Lo Center. He said that when he talked to Blackham about the baby and if she was the mother, she said, “of course not.”
Jessica Blackham McAuliffe took Blackham to the hospital and told staff there that her condition might be related to a baby who was born at a Bi-Lo Center. When law enforcement officers arrived, they started asking Blackham questions about the baby.
“(She was) weak and anemic, having lost a lot of blood, and (the officers) were literally around her bed and had her in tears,” McAuliffe said. “One was calling her a liar; the other was calling her character into question.”
Investigators said a Bi-Lo Center employee discovered the newborn baby in the women’s restroom. They said they believe the baby was born there. Investigators said the child was no more than a couple of hours old when the employee found him.
McAuliffe said his daughter has no memory of what happened Friday. If it is proven through DNA tests that the baby is hers, the family will take responsibility for the child.
Blackham has been separated from her husband of five years for more than a year, her parents said. The couple has a 4-year-old child together.
