Spartanburg Co. Detention Officer Arrested, Fired 2-24-2011

By FOX Carolina Staff
SPARTANBURG, S.C.An officer at the Spartanburg County Detention Center was arrested and fired Thursday morning after an investigation by deputies.
Thomas Brown, 42, was charged with possession of prescription drugs without a prescription, carrying contraband into the jail and simple possession of marijuana.
Spartanburg County Sheriff Chuck Wright said narcotics officers were given an anonymous tip that Brown was providing contraband to inmates. He said investigators found Brown in possession of a bag of pills, which turned out to be painkillers. He said the investigators did not catch Brown giving anything to inmates.
Wright said Brown told investigators that he was taking the pills to treat back pain.
Brown gave deputies consent to search his home and 3 ounces of marijuana was found in a nightstand at his house, Wright said.
"We're out beating the bushes for the criminal element, and we've got one wearing a uniform," Wright said. "We're not going to tolerate that kind of behavior."
Larry Powers, director of the detention center, said Brown, who has worked at the jail since October 2007, was fired after his arrest.
Brown's bond was set at $12,500 Thursday night. His next court date is April 28.
