Greenville Gears Up To Host First 2012 GOP Presidential Debate 5-04-2011
By FOX Carolina Staff GREENVILLE, S.C.Greenville is gearing up to host the first 2012 Republican Presidential debate Thursday night. The event, set to begin at 9 p.m. at the Peace Center, will be broadcast live on the FOX News Channel. Candidates who are scheduled to appear are former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty, former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum, Texas Rep. Ron Paul, former New Mexico Gov. Gary Johnson and businessman Herman Cain. Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich had planned to participate, but organizers said he did not file his papers with the Federal Election Commission before the deadline. Organizers said Rep. Michelle Bachman, former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee and former vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin were excluded for the same reasons. Former Louisiana Gov. Buddy Roemer was excluded because he did not have enough support in recent polls, according to FOX News. The event is not open to the public.
