Stephanie Greene (Spartanburg Co. Sheriff's Office)
SPARTANBURG, SC (FOX Carolina) -
Spartanburg County deputies arrested a Campobello woman after they said drugs in her breast milk killed her child.
Stephanie Greene, 37, was charged Friday with homicide by child abuse and multiple counts of violation of drug distribution laws.
Investigators said they were called to 190 Kimbrell Loop on Nov. 13, 2010, regarding the death of a 1-month-old child.
Toxicology tests revealed there were lethal levels of morphine in Greene's breast milk because of a prescription medication she was taking, deputies said. They said the drug was passed to the child in the milk, which caused the child's death.
"This child was totally dependent on its mother, totally dependent on the adults in its life to take care of it and do all the right things. And when that didn't happen, this child paid the ultimate price," said Spartanburg County Master Deputy Tony Ivey.
Greene faced a judge Friday night. She turned her head away from a FOX Carolina camera during the court appearance.
During the hearing, the magistrate explained he could not set bond because of the nature of the charges, and that she'd have to wait to see a circuit court judge.
Greene remains behind bars at the Spartanburg County Detention Facility.
