The Greenville City Council decided Monday night to delay voting a new version of the smoking ordinance.
The new rules would be tacked on to the existing smoking ban that took effect Jan. 1, 2007. The addendums would outlaw smoking on restaurant patios and in private clubs.
On Monday night, five residents took the podium. After their concerns were voiced, council members decided the language in the new rules was not clear enough.
The City Council said it wants to meet with concerned business owners to clarify some details of the new rules.
Greenville's original smoking ordinance was challenged in the South Carolina Supreme Court after it was passed, but was upheld by the state's highest court.
