Deputies make arrest in fatal Belton shooting

BELTON, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Deputies arrested 31-year-old Steven Randall Cobb of Anderson Monday in connection with the shooting death of a man found along the side of a Belton road on Sunday morning.

Investigators said a newspaper carrier noticed a car on the side of Wilson Lake Road and called for help. Firefighters responding to the scene found 46-year-old Raymond Diehl suffering from several gunshot wounds according to investigators. Investigators said one of the bullets hit a major artery, causing Diehl to bleed to death.

Deputies say Cobb shot Diehl, who then tried to drive away. Diehl then wrecked his car and investigators say he collapsed after trying to walk for help. Deputies say Cobb and Diehl knew each other but aren't releasing a motive for the shooting.

Cobb was charged with murder. He faced a magistrate judge Tuesday morning, but will have to wait until a hearing in circuit court before his bond can be set.

Neighbors say Diehl owned and operated a small apartment building on North Major Road in Belton. Jacqueline Cooplett, who lives in the building, says Diehl lived two doors down. "I moved in in January and didn't have a deposit and he was good hearted and let me move in with just a month's rent," said Cooplett.

Cooplett says Diehl had no family in the area and had become like part of her family and says she was shocked to hear about his death. "Amazingly shocked, I couldn't think of any enemy in the world that he had or any reason he would ever deserve that and it's heartbreaking."
