CLINTON, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Hundreds of people packed a Clinton church Tuesday for the funeral of a woman who investigators said was killed last week by her boyfriend of more than 20 years.

Investigators said 38-year-old Nicole Kingsborough was shot in the head by Benny Brown Jr. on Wednesday night after she arrived to work at the Fehrer plant in Fountain Inn.

Laurens County deputies said that after killing Kingsborough, Brown was involved in a shootout with authorities in Clinton that killed Deputy Roger Rice.

There were so many people at New Bethel AME Church on Tuesday that some people had to stand outside during the service.

It was emotional, but not exactly somber, as music filled the building. People who know her spoke of Kingsborough's big smile and love for children. It was an unconventional preacher's sermon, about domestic violence, urging people, especially women, to make positive changes in their lives that struck chords with so many in the audience.

The pastor reminded the congregation that "real men don't abuse." He said, "How can you beat her one minute and want to love her the next?"

Kingsborough's cousin, Treca DeShields, said, "When you're going through something that's not good, or good for your life, know that you are the are in control of your life, you have the power to change that."

Kingsborough's family said they hope the community can come together to prevent Nicole's fate from happening to others.

A candlelight vigil, in memory of Kingsborough, took place after the burial, at her mother's home in Clinton.

Kingsborough is survived by three children, the youngest of which is 3.
