We are just weeks away from the start of college football season, and two upstate football players are getting honored before they hit the field for the 2011-2012 season.
Monday afternoon, coaches with the Southern Conference announced their preseason all-conference team . Wofford fullback Eric Breitenstein has been named the Southern Conference Preseason Offensive Player of the Year. His teammate, defensive linemen Ameet Pall, was named Preseason Co-Defensive Player of the Year, along with Brent Russell from Georgia Southern.
Breitenstein, who is a junior from Valle Cruis, NC, led the league and ranked fifth in the nation with 1,639 rushing yards last season. He scored 22 touchdowns and ranked fourth nationally with 10.15 points per game.
In 2010, Pall was named the league's Defensive Player of the Year. The Montreal, Quebec native had 60 tackles and ranked eighth nationally in both sacks (12.5) and tackles for loss (22.5).
Also on Monday, the conference's nine head coaches have chosen Appalachian State as the choice to win the league championship, while Wofford was picked to finish third.
