Two killed during picnic at Union park

UNION, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Two people were killed after a shooting at Veterans Park in Union on Tuesday afternoon.

Authorities said the shooting appeared to be the result of an argument.

Public safety officers said Kerry Brown shot Rosemary Lee several times before turning the semi-automatic pistol on himself.

Investigators said Lee was attending a picnic at the park with her family and co-workers at a local McDonald's. Her friends said she was about five months pregnant, but the coroner said he would not be able to verify anything until after an autopsy.

Lee's 2-year-old daughter, Shandi, often reaches for her mother and father.

But at 2 years old, she doesn't understand how her life just changed.

"She was at the park and my step-mother picked her up because she had a bad feeling," Chad Wix, Shandi's father said.

Wix and Shandi's mother married and separated, but still shared love for one another because of their daughter.

In fact, Wix said he and Rosemary were still legally married until her death. On Tuesday, he said Rosemary took Shandi to the park. Wix said just before 1:00 p.m. his step-mother picked up Shandi.

"Probably five minutes after she left the shooting happened," he said.

"She was a great mom, she loved her kids, she loved the one she was going to have, she loved that one over there," Wix said.

Chad's sister heard about the shooting and called him.

"She told me that Rosemary just got shot and I couldn't believe it," he said.

Family members said for several weeks, Kerry Brown threatened Rosemary through Facebook posts.

They said one of Brown posts states: "might get her jaw broke, might get her wig split, might get your car shot up."

They said another one read: "I wonder if God will forgive me if I leave and take someone with me."

Now, they wonder if something could've been done.

"I'm trying to stay strong for my daughter," Wix said.

And 2-year-old Shandi will still reach for her father and her unknowingly, her mother too.

"She's missed."

Police said Rosemary Lee's father, Charles Lee, was arrested at a hospital in Union and charged with disorderly conduct. Those who know him said he was upset about his daughter's death.

Officers said several children visiting the park from the Fairfield County Recreation Department witnessed the shooting. None of them were injured. Counseling is being provided by the Fairfield County Sheriff's Office.
