Man found unconscious 3-year-old in Greenville Co. water park

Posted: Updated:

This morning, the man who found a young child unresponsive in a pool at Greenville County's Otter Creek Water Park shared what happened on Monday.

Russell Beaver said he hadn't known the 3 year old, but the boy, who was at the park with the YMCA preschool daycare program, had clung to him for about an hour, going back and forth from the pools to the fountains.

Beaver said he was leaving the pool but looked back and saw the boy face down and motionless in the water. Beaver said he pulled the boy onto the pavement and called for help. He said even though his wife knew CPR, lifeguards took over care of the boy.

Beaver said that doctors guessed the boy had been underwater for eight to 10 minutes.

The Greenville Recreation Department says the lifeguards did begin CPR before emergency services arrived, and the boy was resuscitated en route to the hospital.

"We're proud of our lifeguards," said Greenville Recreation Department's facilities director, Ray Dunham. "We think they did an excellent job responding in a very stressful and traumatic situation."

Beaver said he did not think the lifeguards responded quickly enough.

"Several people asked me, if I hadn't have seen him, do you think anybody else would've seen him?" said Beaver. "I honestly think that nobody would have noticed the child."

Officials say there were thirteen lifeguards on duty during, which is more than required to watch the 200 to 250 park goers, though the park's capacity is 800.

Dunham says there are not specific ratios for how many chaperones need to be with camp groups, but he does expect more adults to be with younger children.

The YMCA says they are supporting the family, and praying for the little boy.
