Teaching teens to stay active and stay out of trouble

OCEAN SPRINGS, MS (WLOX) -

A rainy day may not seem like the idea day for a game of volleyball.  However, for the Asian Americans for Change organization, it's the perfect setting for a great example.

"We're trying to let teenagers know, 14-21, that you shouldn't just stay at home. You should try to be active, try to be healthier. Also, encourage them to do more activities outside," said Asian Americans for Change Intern Sonny Sok.

Asian Americans for Change uses grass roots projects to help the community.  A recent grant gave its teenage interns a motivating idea to fight obesity.

"We want to bring about awareness that it's so important to focus on the youth," said organization chair Kaitlin Truong. "One of the ideas that the interns had was to engage to the youth to be more active, to engage the youth to be more involved so they can make a difference in the community."

"This event is important because most kids our age now, they become slow, and they decide to just watch TV and stay home, but instead they should be out here being active, having fun," said intern Jimmy Tran.

Soaked to the bone and having a blast, these teenagers are hoping to show that big change in the community can start with small changes in you.

"We don't see a lot of teen youth doing anything. So we thought this was the perfect opportunity to take advantage of," said intern Xuan Phan.

On August 3, the group will host a Youth Health Forum at Fort Maurepas Park in Ocean Springs.  The forum will have a speaker, vendors, and cooking demonstrations to teach the whole family about healthy living.
