GREENVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) -
Inside the Target on Woodruff Road in Greenville County, shoppers pushed their carts around displays of pencils, markers and notebooks. Many of them are looking for deals during the start of the tax free weekend. Store managers said there are deals on clothing, computers, printers and even tablets like the iPad. However, items like cell-phones and jewelry are not exempt.
"The schools now they want 20 glue sticks per kid," Jennifer Walker said as she shopped around.
She is visiting the Upstate from Florida and was excited to learn the tax free holiday would start at 12:01 a.m. Friday.
"Since we're here visiting, we're going to bring back a little extra with us and see what kind of deals we can find," she said.
Eric Martin, a team leader at Target said finding bargains won't be hard to do.
"We feel that anytime a guest comes in to shop at Target, they're going to get an excellent deal regardless if it's on sale or not," Martin said.
School supplies as well as other items are on sale at Wal-Mart in Greenville County, too.
"Wal-Mart is my place to go," Katy Stanberry, an art teacher at Riverside Middle School said.
"For me it comes out of my own personal account," she said.
She is a mother and grandmother and always looks to cash in on a deal.
"We're trying to plan for college for them and retirement for us," Stanberry said as she put several bottles of glue in her shopping cart.
And with two daughters ages 9 and 11, Glen Johnson watches his wallet, too.
"They need hand sanitizer, tissue and other things. We try to stretch the dollar, I mean we're looking for a deal wherever we can get it," Johnson said.
As he and his daughter checked the school supply list, he said a tax exemption is much needed and could mean more money in his pocket.
"That's a great incentive for shopping actually," he said.
The tax free weekend will end Sunday in both South and North Carolina. Georgia does not have a sales tax holiday this year.
