Crime spree leads to body found in Fountain Inn pond

Posted: Updated:

A body was found in a pond in Fountain Inn on Wednesday afternoon, according to the Laurens County Sheriff's Office.

Investigators said a crime spree led to the body being recovered by DNR divers.

Officials with the Department of Natural Resources said they were called to search the pond of the property off Chason road at the request of the Laurens County Sheriff's Office.

According to the Laurens County Coroner, the body was identified as 46-year-old Charles Peterson on Wednesday.

Laurens County Sheriff Ricky Chastain said Peterson was last seen Saturday night while driving a car he was accused of stealing at gunpoint in Anderson. Chastain said Peterson drove the car to Laurens County to a home on Chason Road, then drove it underneath a chain driveway. Fox Carolina was told that after driving onto the property, Peterson stopped the car near the pond and after a brief encounter with the property owner, jumped into the pond.

Laurens County Coroner Nick Nichols said an autopsy will be performed Thursday morning to determine a cause of death.
