Gerald Gaines (Abbeville Co. Jail)A man was charged with driving under the influence after he fled from deputies Wednesday and crashed into another car, killing a woman inside.
The South Carolina Highway Patrol said an Abbeville County deputy was chasing a car on Highway 252. They said the car slammed into another vehicle during the chase.
However, Abbeville County deputies said the car was not being chased. They said 52-year-old Gerald Gaines had stopped the car, which had four people and a methamphetamine lab inside. They said that during the stop, someone ran away and that was when Gaines jumped in the car and sped away.
Abbeville County deputies said Gaines crashed into the second vehicle about a mile away from where he was stopped. They said the deputy who stopped Gaines was the first official on the scene of the crash.
The passenger of the second vehicle, 55-year-old Linda Williams, was thrown from the car and died at the scene, troopers said. They said Williams was not wearing a seat belt.
A second person in the second car was taken to an area hospital, but their condition was not immediately released.
Gaines was charged with two counts of felony DUI. Another person in his car, Richey Hodges, was charged with manufacturing methamphetamine.
