ASHEVILLE, NC (FOX Carolina) -

Asheville police said they charged a teen with possession of a weapon of mass destruction after he was found carrying a sawed-off shotgun Sunday afternoon.

Police said an officer spotted 18-year-old Tommy Harrison Jr., of Asheville, in the Shiloh community and remembered that Harrison had a warrant for his arrest. They said that when the officer tried to arrest Harrison, he fled.

Police said the officer caught up with Harrison a short time later. They said that as the officer was trying to arrest Harrison, a group of about 20 people gathered at the scene and were shouting at the officer. They said backup arrived and were able to control the situation.

Harrison was found carrying a loaded sawed-off shotgun, police said. They said a search of his backpack revealed a mason jar containing marijuana and cash. They said fireworks were also found in his backpack, which are illegal in North Carolina.

Harrison was charged with resist, delay and obstruct, possession of pyrotechnics, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of a schedule VI drug, possession of a controlled substance within 300 feet of a school and possession of a weapon of mass destruction.

Harrison was being held in jail on a $20,000 bond.
