GREENVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) -

A cement truck hit a support column along northbound Interstate 85 Wednesday morning forcing traffic to a crawl.

The incident occurred between Laurens Road and Woodruff Road at the Sulphur Springs Road overpass close to mile marker 51 at 8:05 a.m.

The driver was transported by emergency crews to Greenville Hospital with minor injuries, according to Highway Patrol.

According to officials, the traffic came to a stop and the truck could not stop in time so the driver chose to go off the road rather than hit cars. The truck hit the guard rail then the bridge.

Department of Transportation checked the bridge and it is fine.

Driver was charged with driving too fast for conditions.
