GREENWOOD, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Greenwood police said a girl died about 9:30 a.m. Sunday at a home on Blyth Road after a shooting.

Police said 6-year-old Zykria Hackett and her two cousins, ages 5 and 7, got into a van, waiting for their great-grandfather to drive them to church. They said the children found a gun inside the van.

Greenwood County Coroner Jim Coursey said Hackett was shot in the neck and bled to death. He said Hackett died at the scene after emergency workers tried to revive her.

Neighbors said the children's great-grandfather often looked after them, while their parents worked. They said the cars are typically locked, and guns are not usually around. They said the van had been borrowed recently, and someone left a gun inside by accident.

Brenda Gilbert, one neighbor, said she heard a shot and later saw her dog, Princess, standing over Zykria, who was lying on the ground.

Gilbert said she didn't realize what had happened until she saw police cars and ambulances arriving at the home.

"They were such good children," said Gilbert. "I sure hate that this happened. Mr. Hill (is) a good man. Their mother (is) a good lady. It's just a tragic accident."

Greenwood police said no charges will be filed in connection with the accidental shooting.

Hackett's mother told FOX Carolina on Monday that she is not mad at the great-grandfather.
