Following an attempted rape over the weekend, the Spartanburg County Sheriff urged women to get concealed permits to carry guns.

One Upstate mother agrees.

Andrea Fantacone enjoys hanging out with her family around the house. She has two children with her husband, but when she is out alone, she said she makes sure she protects herself.

"Women do need to understand that we have an obligation not just to ourselves but to our families," she said.

She's a gun owner and has her concealed weapons permit.

"I know that I would be able to take care of myself," Fantacone said.

She said it's a choice she made for herself and other women shouldn't be afraid or feel vulnerable while they're out.

"Take a self defense course and learn how to use a weapon properly," she said.

"Most importantly, I always follow the law when it comes to being a gun owner."

Gun shop owners and those at the shooting range said more women are signing up for target practice and applying for concealed weapons permits because of violent crimes against women.

On Sunday, deputies in Spartanburg County arrested Walter Lance. He's accused of attacking a woman while she walked her dog in Milliken park.

"Ladies walk in groups, get a concealed weapons permit," Sheriff Chuck Wright said on Monday during a news conference.

Wright said women should own guns.

"I don't want you to go for the mace. Gun control to me is when you can get your barrel back on the target quick," he said.

And Andrea Fantacone said she's ready if she needs to be.
