Heavy rain expected for beginning of week, flooding in some areas

GREENVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) -

The Mountains and Upstate could see several inches of rain over Monday and Tuesday, before things dry out on Wednesday.

Meteorologist Alexandra Wilson said there is a chance for some severe thunderstorms Monday afternoon, though the threat is low.

On Tuesday, Wilson said some of the highest elevations in the mountains could see a few snowflakes as other areas continue to receive rain. By the end of Tuesday, most of the area is looking at rainfall accumulations of 1 to 3 inches, though most of that will be overnight.

In the Flood Watch counties, accumulations of 4 to 6 inches of rain will be possible, according to Wilson. In addition to the rain and snow, winds will be on the gusty side--especially in Western North Carolina.

The National Weather Service issued a flash flood warning for Henderson, Transylvania, Jackson and Macon counties in Western North Carolina and said that as 10:43 a.m. Monday, local law enforcement agencies reported a log jam along the French Broad River.

The Henderson and Transylvania county warnings are until 4:30 p.m. and the Macon and Jackson county warnings are until 6:30 p.m.

Authorities said the log jam is a quarter mile upstream from Crab Tree Road. They said the river is flooding a tree farm and corn fields in the area.

According to the NWS, the jam could give way at any time as the river continues to rise, but authorities do not know how large of an area will be affected if the jam breaks.

FLOOD WATCH in effect until late Monday, rainfall accumulations of 4 to 6 inches are possible by tonight. The watch includes Asheville and everywhere to the southwest in North Carolina, the northwest corner of the Upstate and mountains of northeast Georgia.

LAKE WIND ADVISORY in effect until 6 p.m. Tuesday for the Mountains, gusts of 40-50 mph possible on ridges, 40 mph gusts possible in most locations within the advisory.
