New Upstate jobs may come from Amazon.com facility

SPARTANBURG, SC (AP/FOX Carolina) -

Bales of hay sit on acres of land in an area of John Dodd Road in Inman, but soon something new could be built there.

"Project 300 is Amazon.com.dedc.llc," said David Britt, Vice Chairman with Spartanburg County council.

The code name, Project 300, was revealed as Amazon.com Monday night during a council meeting. Council members said final negotiations are in the works, and it could mean more jobs in Spartanburg County.

"It's going to be a lot of jobs and a lot of opportunity at a time when we need them most," Britt said.

And although Britt said he couldn't reveal much, he did say it is a positive thing for the county, the Upstate and the state.

"I can't get into details," he said.

Recently, Amazon opened a distribution facility in Lexington County. But before the company agreed to come to South Carolina, state representatives voted to waive taxes for the company for the next five years.

"This is an international company that's done great things," Britt said. He said council members and lawyers are reviewing paperwork.

"We want to make sure every 'I' is dotted and every 'T' crossed, so when we have the third reading, it's a final deal," he said.

And soon the area off John Dodd Road in Inman could be the new home for Amazon.com.

"Better believe this makes another positive statement for us," he said.

Spartanburg County officials said the plant would employ almost 400 people.

County council officials named Amazon shortly before a public hearing Monday afternoon on the project, which is expected to be a $50 million investment by the distributor.

Amazon began operations at a larger facility in Cayce earlier this year. That distribution center is expected to create 2,000 jobs by the end of 2013 in order to qualify for a state sales tax exemption.
