Deputies said they were called into investigate a shoplifting at a grocery store when the suspect was identified as a Lyman city employee.

According to a Spartanburg County Sheriff's Office report, a witness saw Margaret Davenport, 66, of Wellford, open packages and place them inside her purse while shopping at the BiLo on Greenville Highway in Lyman on Thursday.

The witness said Davenport noticed him watching and started removing the items from her purse and placed it on the shelf, according to the report. The witness escorted Davenport to the front office after she apologized and said she would pay for the items.

Deputies said the value of the items was $49.81 and Davenport was arrested and charged with shoplifting. The report said a background check showed she had two prior shoplifting convictions.

The Spartanburg County Detention Center website showed Davenport was released on a $10,000 bond on Thursday.
