ASHEVILLE, NC (FOX Carolina) -

Asheville Police said worked a large accident scene Wednesday morning that closed a highway.

The accident happened near 248 New Leicester Highway near Compton Drive in Asheville at 7:50 a.m. The road was not reopened until 1:40 p.m.

Police said emergency crews responded to the collision where there were reports of serious injuries, including a possible entrapment and ejection. Police closed the entire highway to allow emergency crews to work the scene.

At the scene, Lieutenant Stony Gonce said that there were four cars involved in the accident, but they are still reconstructing the scene to determine what happened. Gonce said they think a car crossed the center line and flipped, causing the collision.

Gonce said a Ford Expedition was traveling northbound on New Leicester Highway when it drifted across the center turn lane striking a Ford Mustang. The driver of both vehicles were transported to Mission Hospital with serious injuries.

The driver of the SUV was ejected as the vehicle rolled over, according to Gonce. He said the initial collision caused the Mustang to be redirected into the path of another vehicle, whose driver was injured but not transported to the hospital.

Gonce said debris from the collisions struck two additional vehicles traveling southbound, whose drivers were not injured.

The road was closed approximately five hours. Gonce said the investigation is ongoing and officers are working with the District Attorney's office regarding potential charges.
