SPARTANBURG, SC (FOX Carolina) -
Deputies said a Glendale, SC, woman with a service dog tried to shoplift from a Boiling Springs Walmart on Monday.
According to a Spartanburg County Sheriff's Office report, the store's loss prevention officer observed Elaine Smith, 57, place several items in the electric cart she was in and hide them under a dog blanket in the cart's basket.
The report said Smith then went to check out, buying only two bags of ice. She left the store without paying for any of the items under the blanket, according to the loss prevention officer.
Smith had a small black service dog with her at the time, according to the report. The officer stopped Smith and escorted back inside to wait for deputies.
Smith said she used the dog for her 32 illnesses, but could not identify which specific illness, according to the report.
Deputies took Smith into custody after a warrant for shoplifting first offense was issued. The Spartanburg County Detention Center website shows Smith was released Tuesday on a $2,130 bond.
The items were recovered by the Walmart.
