HENDERSONVILLE, NC (FOX Carolina) -

Henderson County investigators said they found the body of 38-year-old Shelby Wilkie.

They arrested her husband, Michael Leroy Wilkie, 39, at 9:30 p.m. on Thursday. Deputies said he was charged with first-degree murder in the disappearance with his wife Shelby.

Wilkie is being held without bond in the Henderson County Detention Facility and appeared in District Court Friday morning

In court, Wilkie asked for a public defender and will have a probable cause hearing on Jan. 27. Prosecutors said they want the maximum penalty, which is the death sentence or life without parole.

Investigators did not say much, but they did say her body was found at 705 Kanuga Lake Road in Hendersonville around 9 a.m. Thursday. They said her husband confessed to his wife's death and led them to her body.

Investigators said they received information from numerous sources that raised suspicions about Wilkie's truthfulness concerning the reported disappearance of his wife Shelby that led to search warrants and the search of multiple vehicles and properties throughout the county.

Henderson County deputies said they were searching a park Thursday afternoon for clues to help find Shelby Wilkie, who went missing Monday.

Deputies said Shelby Wilkie was last seen at her home at 7 a.m. Monday at 131 Moody St. while she was preparing to go to work. Michael Wilkie reported her missing to deputies at 6:28 p.m. on Monday when he said she had not returned to their home.

Shelby Wilkie was described as white, 5'9" and 180 pounds, with long brown hair and brown eyes. She was driving a black 2012 Ford Escape with temporary North Carolina license plate number 18512141, which expires Jan. 27.

The couple had a daughter that was born in October 2011.

Deputies said the vehicle was found by a Fletcher police officer Wednesday night in the parking lot of J and S Cafeteria on Airport Road. They said the vehicle was taken to an impound lot for processing.
