GREENVILLE, SC (AP) -

Former U.S. Rep. Gresham Barrett is joining one of South Carolina's largest law firms.

Nelson Mullins Riley & Scarborough says it hired the Republican for its government relations group. Barrett will operate from the firm's offices in Washington, D.C., and Greenville.

Barrett served three terms in the state House before being elected to Congress in 2002. He didn't seek re-election to the Third District last year to pursue an unsuccessful bid for governor. He lost in a Republican primary runoff last June.

The Westminster native and Citadel graduate previously ran his family's furniture store.

Nelson Mullins is also home to former U.S. Secretary of Education and Gov. Dick Riley, former state House Speaker and Ambassador to Canada David Wilkins, and former Ambassador to Great Britain Phil Lader.
