Deputies said Saturday morning two suspects tried to rob a Spartanburg County Waffle House at gunpoint when a customer with a concealed weapon shot and killed one of the suspects.
According to the Spartanburg County Sheriff's Office, at 1:13 a.m. deputies responded to the Waffle House at 2230 Chesnee Highway. They said two masked people entered the restaurant and at least one of them was armed with a gun, and they tried to rob the business.
Deputies said the armed suspect began to order customers to the floor while demanding cash from the register.
A customer with a concealed weapon permit had a gun on him and asked the suspect to put his gun down and wait for deputies, who in turn pointed his gun at the customer, according to deputies.
Investigators said the customer then shot the suspect, who fell to the floor, then the second suspect tried to leave. They said the customer tried to stop him, leading to a struggle and the suspect went for the customer's gun.
The customer fired one shot and the second suspect fled on foot, according to deputies.
Spartanburg County Coroner Rusty Clevenger identified the suspect that died at the Waffle House as Dante Lamonte Williams, of Roebuck, who turned 19 Saturday. He said Williams died as a result of gunshots to the head and chest.
Deputies said no one else was injured during the incident.
Sheriff Chuck Wright said they would not release the name of the customer for his safety and because the second suspect was still at large and unidentified.
Late Saturday night deputies identified the second suspect. Kenneth Jowan Craig, 29, was arrested at a location off of Alexander Avenue.
Investigators said tips and information from the investigation led to his identification.
Craig was charged with armed robbery and possession of a weapon during a violent crime. The warrants said that Craig took money and belongings from the Waffle House with the use of a handgun.
