SPARTANBURG, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Amazon.com, Inc. announced Monday its plans to open a new Spartanburg County facility, which will create hundreds of new jobs and invest $50 million in the state.

In December, the Spartanburg County Council approved the incentives package for the proposed Amazon.com distribution plant and 30-year deal, which is expected to create 400 new jobs.

Construction on the plant also began in December.

Amazon's first distribution plant opened in Lexington County in 2011. The Spartanburg County facility will be will approximately 1 million-square-feet and is located near John Dodd Road.

"South Carolina has been a great home for us and we're excited to create hundreds of additional jobs in the state," said Dave Clark, vice president, Amazon Global Customer Fulfillment. "We had a great first holiday season in Lexington County and we look forward to serving our customers from both Lexington and Spartanburg Counties by the fall."

The company said they will begin hiring later in 2012 and the facility is slated to open in the fall.

The council revealed the proposed plant in November when they officially announced that "Project 300" was Amazon.

"It's going to be a lot of jobs and a lot of opportunity at a time when we need them most," David Britt said, Vice Chairman with Spartanburg County council.

Britt said it is a positive thing for the county, the Upstate and the state.

Amazon began operations at a larger facility in Calyces earlier this year. That distribution center is expected to create 2,000 jobs by the end of 2013 in order to qualify for a state sales tax exemption.
