MARION, NC (FOX Carolina) -

Police said a standoff at a home in Marion ended Tuesday afternoon and that the suspect was injured.

The standoff happened at 70 W. Wilhelmenia St.

Marion police said that the wife of George Painter III came to the police department asking for help with a domestic dispute. They said that when officer went to the home, Painter came to a window and had a gun in his hand.

Investigators said officers told Painter to drop the weapon, but he walked away. They said that was when officers backed away from the home and called for assistance.

Police said after trying to make contact with Painter several times, they went into the home. They said Painter was found on a couch in the living room, suffering from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Painter was flown to Mission Hospital to be treated, police said. His condition was not immediately released.
