GAFFNEY, SC (FOX Carolina) -
Cherokee County deputies worked Wednesday morning to get a man out of his house during an all-night standoff.
Cherokee County Sheriff Steve Mueller said the first call came in at 12:45 a.m. about a man attempting to commit suicide at a residence near White Plains and Soap Stone roads off of U.S. 29 near Cowpens.
Mueller said deputies went to the home and the man barricaded himself in a bedroom, firing at least three shots. He said they were able to get the family out of the home at that time and then he fired three to four more rounds.
They did not have contact with him for two to three hours, then at 5:45 a.m. the man came to the door, shouted curse words and said deputies were not coming in, according to the sheriff. He said the man also had rifles pointed out of every window on the second floor of the residence, including a telescope.
The Spartanburg robot assist with the SWAT team was sent to the front door to talk with the man, according to deputies. He came to the door and admitted to needing help and surrendered.
Mueller said the man claimed to be injured and had smeared fake blood on him, but he was not injured.
When the standoff ended, they took the man into custody and transported him to a hospital for evaluation, according to the Sheriff.
Mueller identified the man as Jerry Lipscomb, who was charged with attempted assault on an officer for shooting at deputies and said more charges could be filed.
Deputies also had nearby roads blocked Wednesday due to the incident.
