Police arrest 1 connected with multi-state criminal group

ASHEVILLE, NC (FOX Carolina) -

Asheville Police said a criminal organization has been operating in the Upstate and western North Carolina, and they arrested one person in connection with their illegal activities.

Police said during the past several months the group has broken into vehicles, stolen check and identifications, then a woman in disguise would cash the checks at banks throughout the area.

On Wednesday, officers received multiple calls about a woman trying to cash stolen checks at Asheville-area banks.

Vickie Lynn Brantley, 50, of Greenville, was arrested and charged with two counts of theft, two counts of uttering a forged instrument, and possession of drug paraphernalia. Her current bond was set at $200,500 secure and police said more charges could follow.

Asheville Police said they were working with other law enforcement agencies regarding the ongoing investigation of the criminal group, including the FBI. They said the U.S. Secret Service was notified and brought when it was revealed the group was working throughout the country.

The South Carolina agencies involved were Easley Police, Greenwood Police, the Greenwood County Sheriff's Office and the Greenville County Sheriff's Office. The North Carolina agencies involved were Woodfin Police, Weaverville Police and Fletcher Police.
