GREENVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) -
The City of Greenville was selected to host the UCI Para-Cycling Road World Championships in 2014.
The five-day competition is scheduled for Aug. 28 to Sept. 1, 2014 and will bring more than 450 athletes from 45 countries to the Upstate.
Each athlete uses a bicycle that is adapted for his or her abilities so they can compete in individual time trials and team events like the handcycle relay.
The last time the championships were held in the United States was in 1998 in Colorado Springs, CO.
"The UCI is delighted to be returning to the United States with the UCI Para-Cycling Road World Championships in 2014," said UCI President Pat McQuaid. "The UCI particularly looks forward to this event in South Carolina, as a World Championship event brings a high level of global attention and acts as an important vector for growth of cycling at regional and national levels."
UCI officials said the expected economic impact in the Upstate is $4.5 million.
