Warmer Than Normal...Maybe For A While

Posted: Updated:

Temperatures this week will be about 10 degrees above normal for daytime highs, while tonight will be seasonably chilly in the 20s and 30s.  You may be wondering WHAT IS GOING ON WITH ALL THIS WARMTH!?  It's all I get asked when I'm at the grocery store, running errands or walking around the neighborhood!  Basically we are in the grips of La Nina and a positive NAO (North Atlantic Oscillation).  I attached a pic of the NAO and it's forecast for the next few days.  It has been positive for quite a while this winter, and is expected to stay near positive for upcoming days.

When the NAO is positive, it hampers any cold, arctic air from impacting the east coast.

La Nina's main calling card for winter is the drier than normal pattern, but we have actually gotten some decent bouts of rain despite La Nina's best efforts!

Looks for some showers later this week, with temps near 70 by Thursday!  I'm not expecting a lot of rain, but up to half an inch late week can't be ruled out!

Like I've said, don't give up hope for 1 good snow this year.  2009 ended with a big snow in March, and it was a La Nina year.  We just need to get some of that COLD Canadian and Alaskan air to spill into the U.S.
