ASHEVILLE, NC (FOX Carolina) -

Buncombe County deputies said a local teacher is in jail, charged with indecent liberties with a child and secret peeping.

Kevin Calloway,41, of Swannanoa, was arrested Wednesday night by Buncombe County deputies. They say he was a sixth grade math and science teacher at Charles D. Owen Middle School.

Van Duncan, Buncombe County's sheriff said Calloway used of some sort of an electronic device to take pornographic pictures of children, without their knowledge.

The schools superintendent, Dr. Tony Baldwin, said the school's principal, Vicky Matthews, is on leave now, during internal investigations. He said there seems to have been a lapse in reporting the situation. Baldwin said reports to the school were made in late December, but the sheriff's department heard complaints from parents at the end of January.

Neighbors didn't want to be identified, but said Calloway was a good neighbor and father, "We were surprised you know; this is a quiet neighborhood … You don't know if he did it or not, you know, if the kids made it up; it's up to the court system."

Baldwin said the school system has suspended Calloway, with plans to dismiss him. He said they'd rather be safe than sorry.

"In our school system and this profession," said Baldwin, "there is just zero tolerance for that type of illegal and unethical conduct."

Sheriff's officials continue to investigate, and Calloway remains in jail on a $10,000 bond. His next court appearance is set for Feb. 23.
