Bank robbery prompts lockdown at Spartanburg school

SPARTANBURG, SC (FOX Carolina) -

A Bank robbery in Spartanburg on Monday morning prompted a lockdown at a nearby school.

The robbery happened at 10:15 a.m. at First Citizens Bank at 1894 E. Main St.

Spartanburg police said a man wearing a surgical mask walked into the bank and demanded money from a teller. They said the teller placed money in an envelope, and the man then grabbed it and ran out of the bank. They said the man never showed a weapon.

Police said that a short time later, a vehicle matching the one seen at the bank during the robbery was spotted near Drayton Avenue. They said that vehicle was stopped on Glendalyn Avenue, and the driver was arrested.

The suspect was identified in an incident report as 51-year-old Reginald Lyles, of Spartanburg. He was charged with bank robbery

Erika Shoolbred, of Spartanburg County School District Seven,0 said Houston Elementary on Skylyn Drive was locked down for 30 minutes while officers searched the area for the man who held up the bank.
