A Gaffney man was sentenced Wednesday after he admitted to robbing a woman at gunpoint while she tried to make a night deposit at a local bank.

Solicitor Barry Barnette said 19-year-old Brion Makupson pleaded guilty to armed robbery and was sentenced to 20 years in prison.

Barnette said the hold-up happened on May 10, 2011 at the First Piedmont Federal Bank on W. Floyd Baker Blvd. when the victim said Makupson approached her car and demanded she give him the deposit bag and her purse.

Investigators said Makupson fled, dropping some of the stolen property along the way.

During their investigation, Gaffney police said they noticed Makupson touch the hood of the victim's car, so they ran the fingerprint which linked them to Makupson. Investigators said he confessed to the crime after he was confronted by police.

"Brion Makupson has plenty of time behind bars to think about the consequences of his pathetic actions," Assistant Solicitor Matt Kendall said. "I also want to congratulate the Gaffney Police Department on a job well-done."

Barnette said Makupson will have to serve 80 percent of his sentence before he is eligible for parole.
