Cool Today... COLD This Weekend!

Posted: Updated:

Happy Thursday!  We're off to another cold start - most of the area is in the low to mid 30s.  However, breezy winds are making it feel colder in WNC.  Asheville's wind chill value has been in the low to mid 20s, as winds are out of the north in the 10 to 15 mph range.  There are more clouds in the Mountains to start the day, and a few flurries are possible along the TN border through the next hour or so.

Clouds will give way to more clearing through the mid/late-morning in the Mountains, while we're already clear across the Upstate.  This afternoon will bring mostly sunny skies with just a few cirrus clouds overhead - these are the thin, wispy clouds that will just filter the sunshine at times.  Highs will be cool - but typical for early February - rising into the upper 40s in WNC and the low to mid 50s across the Upstate.

We'll warm up a bit on Friday before some much colder air arrives for the weekend.  A cold front will move through Friday night - bringing a few scattered rain/snow showers to the Mountains by Friday evening.  Valley locations will start with raindrops, but we'll quickly transition to all snow area-wide.  In the Upstate, we'll stay mainly dry, and will only watch for a spotty shower late Friday.

On Saturday, snow showers will continue to fall on the higher elevations of WNC.  These areas along the TN border could pick up a new inch or two of snowfall by Saturday evening, but the "big story" this weekend will be the cold.  Mountain highs will stay in the 30s both Saturday and Sunday.  In the Upstate, you'll be dry and brighter - but still cold.  Highs in Greenville, Spartanburg and Anderson will only hit the low 50s on Saturday, and the mid 40s Sunday (that's ten degrees below-normal).

We'll watch a system that will bring precip back to the region on Valentine's Day.  While it's still too early to call, an early-morning start could allow for some wintry precip across the area.  As I said, it's still too early to get hyped up about anything, but know we'll be watching it as we go through the weekend.
