COLUMBIA, SC (FOX Carolina) -
An Abbeville man was sentenced to six months in prison after pleading guilty to stealing mail as part of a counterfeit check scheme.
Federal prosecutors said that on May 27, 2009, 34-year-old Michael Rice stole a pickup truck from the Haywood Mall parking lot in Greenville, and the next day led Abbeville police on a high-speed chase, which ended in a crash.
Prosecutors said large quantities of stolen mail were found in the truck Rice was driving. They said that Rice was going to use the mail to print fake checks, but was arrested before he could do so.
After serving six months in prison, Rice must serve three years of probation.
