FOX Carolina 21Tuesday Winter Weather Breakdown

Tuesday Winter Weather Breakdown

Posted: Updated:

Good morning everyone!  Hope you had a nice, restful weekend - I know I couldn't get myself out of bed with the cold air around.  Today's highs will stay below-normal, but we will be much warmer than we were over the weekend.  Clouds will increase this afternoon, with highs around 50° in the Upstate and in the mid 40s in the Mountains.

The system that will bring us some wintry weather chances overnight and early Tuesday is moving through the central part of the country this morning.  The system looks pretty good on the radar this morning, but don't let that fool you.  As it works farther east - and closer to us - it will weaken.  So instead of steady, heavy precipitation, our area is looking at scattered, light precip.

The precip will move in during the early-morning hours of Tuesday, starting as a wintry mix for most of the area - so some snowflakes, sleet and even freezing rain will be falling before sunrise.  By mid-morning, Upstate spots will change over to rain only.  So, we probably won't see any accumulation in Upstate spots - with the exception of an icy patch on an overpass or bridge.  Most of WNC will transition to rain by mid/late-AM, but spots in SW NC and the mountains of NE GA could keep the wintry mix through lunchtime.  This will allow for a light accumulation in these areas - so slick roadways will be a concern.  Winter Weather Advisories have been posted for these areas through noon Tuesday (see image at right).

The afternoon will bring some spotty, light rain showers - and tomorrow's highs will reach the upper 40s and low 50s.  We'll see a warm-up on Wednesday, with warmer temps and more sunshine coming mid-week.
