Wintry Mix Tuesday AM, then watching the weekend!

Posted: Updated:

We aren't looking at a big winter weather event for tomorrow AM, but it could be the first time some of us in the Upstate have seen sleet this season!  Here's what I'm thinking, starting with midnight -

Midnight-3am: Snow and sleet will develop in the mountains of western NC and north GA. Up to 2 inches of accumulation will be possible through the night in those locals.  In the Upstate and lower elevations of northeast GA, expect some brief, spotty sleet and snow toward 3-4am.

3-6am: This is when the Upstate will have the best chance of frozen precip.  Freezing rain doesn't look like an issue for the Upstate, but in the mountains we'll notice some of the sleet and snow changing over to freezing rain toward daybreak.  Roads in extreme western NC and north GA will likely become slippery in spots around the AM commute time.  Especially watch for icy bridges and overpasses!

6am-8am: Sleet and snow will turn to light rain and drizzle for the Upstate.  Freezing rain with patches of sleet and snow will continue in the mountains.

8am-Noon: Mountains will see all the frozen precip turn to rain as temps warm above freezing, but freezing rain could linger for a while in the sheltered mountain valleys.  Upstate will notice spotty rain showers through midday.

Tuesday afternoon will generally be dry, but some spotty showers will hang on in some spots.  Tuesday night watch for some fog!

More precipitation comes in late Wednesday night into Thursday, but that should be all rain.

As for the weekend... yikes! We are watching a low pressure that is forecast to develop along the gulf coast and move through the southeast (Euro track takes the low through southern SC and near Savannah, while GFS keeps the action too far south to impact us greatly). Looks like a good set-up to get a decent snow in the mountains as cold air wraps around with moisture behind the low.  Canadian looks interesting too, and it's also picking up on a low track similar to euro.  Glad we have something to watch through the week!  Looks like mostly rain for the Upstate at this point, but something to watch!
