Union County deputies said an inmate attacked a detention center officer after he became aggravated that he could not make a phone call.

According to an incident report, inmate Jimmy Henderson was upset because the telephone system had not turned on, and he could not make a call. An officer tried to get him back into his cell until the phones turned on, but Henderson refused.

The report said the officer repeatedly tried to get Henderson to calm down and into his cell, but Henderson responded by hitting the officer in the head and face.

Deputies said the officer eventually got Henderson on the ground, sat on him and placed his elbow on his throat to subdue him.

The report said Henderson then went into his cell and the officer was eventually taken to the hospital emergency room for observation before he was released.
