PIEDMONT, SC (FOX Carolina) -

There's a popular creature getting a lot of "likes" on the Powdersville Facebook Page. It's also getting a lot of comments, but Karen McGahey wants an unlike option.

"All I know is it's scary," she said.

She said she's seen this "thing" in her backyard in Piedmont.

"He had huge eyes and he was like starring at us crouched down," she said.

Her neighbor set up a motion-censored deer cam in a wooded area of Piedmont, and other neighbors said recently something killed a rabbit and a small dog.

"We think it's a black panther. This thing is roaming back and forth through the woods," McGahey said.

The mystery mammal is causing so much commotion that FOX Carolina sent the picture to the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources.

"A black panther is from South America and is not on the North America continent," said Robert McCullough, a DNR spokesman.

McCullough said a biologist examined the picture and believes it's a black coyote. He said it's tough to tell though because of other factors, like quality of the picture or the time of day it was snapped.

"It's very hard to be definitive on a single picture without a frame of reference," he said.

McGahey said what she saw is no coyote, but whatever it is she wants it gone.

McCullough said it's not likely the mystery animal is a panther unless the animal is someone's pet that got loose. However, they are looking into it.
