A group of Upstate neighbors say they're sick because of their water.
Seven people in the Broadway community of Anderson County are suing the water district and its supplier. The neighbors said, for years, the water flowing from the taps in their homes was contaminated.
Jimmy Childs says it was in 2008 that he started having medical issues, most damaging was MRSA staph infection, which started with an ulcer on his big toe and spread. Eventually doctors amputated, bit by bit, his toe, foot and leg.
Childs said after conversations with his neighbors, he discovered that at least six others on his street suffer from similar infections, and the lawyer they hired, Tom Donaway, privately tested the water, finding coliform, and fecal coliform - E-coli.
"If there's something wrong with [the water], we want it fixed," said Childs. "I'm going to live here for the rest of my life; I don't want no issues with nobody, but I think, pain and suffering, if [the water] is what caused this … I've been through a lot of pain and suffering and I'm still going through it."
The Broadway Water and Sewage District water tower stands in Childs' backyard. The district is an affiliate of the Anderson Regional Joint Water System, which supplies Canton Lane's water. Both companies are listed as defendants in Donaway's lawsuit.
Fox Carolina spoke with the executive director of the Regional Joint Water System, who assured us, and all customers, that their water is tested every day, that the water meets every state and industry standard, and that after these complaints, and further testing - nothing dangerous was found.
