MILLS RIVER, NC (FOX Carolina) -

A wildfire that forced authorities to evacuate people from nearly 10 homes near Mills River on Tuesday charred about 80 acres.

A spokesman for the North Carolina Forestry Commission said the fire was burning parts of the Pisgah National Forest near the intersection of North Mills River Road and Scrugs Run. He said the fire spread into a nearby neighborhood, which prompted the evacuations.

Officials said two homes and an outbuilding sustained minor damage in the blaze.

Forestry officials said that a campfire, which the campers thought was extinguished, was fanned and spread by the wind.

Officials said the campers were issued a ticket.
