Oakwood Cemetery has history of 'strange' happenings

Posted: Updated:
SPARTANBURG, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Things are slowly returning to normal at Oakwood Cemetery. The grave site of James Smith is now encased in concrete, and blocks are back in place near the grave. The mounds of dirt are still the only sign that his grave was dug up.

The strange events surrounding what's happened here this week are just the tip of a long history for this cemetery - one that some say is filled with strange events at night, and not of the supernatural kind.

"I was out with my friends and I basically came out and there were people here in hoods - very dark and shady people - quite aggressive," says Matt Lovinggood.

Lovinggood hosts ghost tours of the cemetery each Halloween, but he also works as a paranormal investigator. His ventures out into Oakwood at night have led him to what he says are strange groups of people.

And he's not the only one.

Krystal Hannon says, "We've ran into a few groups. And all the information on the internet says it's subject to vandalism. So it could be teenagers, it could be ritualistic societies down here."

Spartanburg police, for their part, won't comment on the groups that come down here at night.  They do say, however, that there have been several incidents that have happened here before involving everything from vandalism to drugs to an attempted suicide.

But taking a skull from a grave site? Captain Art Littlejohn says, "It's odd we haven't had this before."

While the belief in ghosts and spirits might bring people to the cemetery, the sheer act of going into a cemetery at night doesn't sit well, even with the people who have done it. Ghosts or not, they say this cemetery just isn't safe at night.

Hannon says, "Of course you have a creeped out feeling, but you're in a cemetery at night.  Anybody would be creeped out."

"If you want to go out here and have fun at night with a camera, stay out of the cemetery so you don't get hurt," says Lovinggood.

The cemetery has asked for stepped up patrols through here at night.

In the meantime, the Spartanburg Police Department says they're still looking for information leading to the arrest of the suspect or suspects in this case.
