SPARTANBURG, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Spartanburg County deputies were investigating a deadly shooting after they said two suspects were shot to death at a Spartanburg apartment complex Saturday morning.

Deputies said they were called to the Lee's Crossing Apartments on Powell Mill Road at 12:09 a.m. about a burglary and while on their way to the complex, the call was upgraded to a possible home invasion with shots fired.

When they arrived, deputies said they found two people unresponsive behind AC units, who had been shot outside one of the apartments.

Deputies said a resident noticed the subjects trying to enter his apartment as he was coming home, and shot both men.

One of the suspects died at the scene and the other was transported to Spartanburg Regional Medical Center where he later died, according to deputies.

Spartanburg County Coroner Rusty Clevenger said 22-year-old Michael Gentry-Hil Jr., of Spartanburg, died at the scene. He said the second suspect, 18-year-old Darren Hill, later died at the hospital.

Investigators said they have not discovered any family relationship between the two suspects.

Deputies and the coroner's office continue to investigate the shooting and said all parties involved in the incident have been located and identified, and there is no longer a threat to the community.

According to deputies, there have been no charges filed against anyone at this time.

Sheriff Chuck Wright told FOX Carolina that the specific apartment unit had been burglarized before.

Wright said that it's preferable to have law enforcement handle these types of incidents, but he said the home owner felt threatened, and so he took action.

Clevenger said Michael Hill Jr. died of a gunshot wound to the head and Darren Hill died from brain death secondary to a gunshot wound to the head.
