Rigel Bonilla (Haywood County Detention Center)
WAYNESVILLE, NC (FOX Carolina) -
Haywood County deputies said an inmate escaped from prison Monday afternoon and is considered dangerous.
Deputies said Rigel Bonilla, 22, escaped about 1:40 p.m. from the Haywood County Detention Center.
According to deputies, another inmate popped a sprinkler head, flooding the area near the back door, allowing Bonilla to escape through the open door past several employees and over a barbed wire fence.
Deputies said they are looking into whether the inmate that popped the sprinkler was trying to help Bonilla escape.
Bonilla was charged with several crimes including felony larceny, felony breaking and entering, and was on hold by immigration officials after he was arrested by Waynesville police.
Bonilla had been in custody since September, 2011, and had a resisting an officer charge, according to deputies.
