CLINTON, SC (FOX Carolina) -
Authorities that searched the Sumter National Forest for a Clinton woman who disappeared during a camping trip Wednesday said she was found Friday morning.
Family members said that Patricia "Lynn" Avery went camping in the forest near the Enoree River with her husband Wednesday night. They said that at some point during the night, Avery wandered away.
On Friday, Laurens County deputies said they found Avery alive about 10 a.m. and next to the river with injuries to her legs, a mile away from their campsite. Rescuers had to transport Avery eight miles by canoe from where she was found to where an ambulance could pick her up.
When Avery was found, she did not have any shoes on and could not walk due to a possible broken ankle and leg. Rescuers said she also had cuts to her leg and arm and poison ivy. Rescuers said she drank a lot of river water, but was dehydrated and slightly hypothermic.
Avery told rescuers she knew everything that happened and recognized family members at the rescue site when she was pulled up from the river.
Avery was taken to a local hospital. Her family said she probably survived because she knew the area well. They also said that she has taken her medication every day but had not had it since Wednesday.
Clinton woman goes missing in woods
"The family just wants for everybody to pray for her, that she gets found safe," said Donna Chrisley, Avery's sister-in-law.
Laurens County Sheriff Ricky Chastain said Avery's husband got lost in the forest while trying to find some firewood.
"After he got lost, (he) came back to find out (that) she was missing, as well," Chastain said.
Chastain said the terrain where Avery went missing is rough. He also said the people have been lost in the area before.
"It's an area (where) even a skilled outdoorsman would have trouble surveying their way around," Chastain said.
Laurens County deputies said they, along with South Carolina game wardens, agents of the Department of Natural Resources and crews from neighboring counties, began searching for Avery on Thursday afternoon.
Avery's family members said it was unusual for her to disappear.
