There's a 161-year-old law on the books that ties the Titanic and the modern-day tragedy of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill together in a way that has angered many people.
The Limitation of Liability Act of 1851 allows the owner of a vessel to limit damage claims to whatever the value of the ship is at the end of its voyage.
So if a ship sinks, a survivor's family cannot sue for more than said ship is worth at the time of the sinking.
