CLINTON, SC (FOX Carolina) -

A Clinton man is dead after an officer-involved shooting early Sunday morning.

Clinton police said the shooting happened off Spruce Street in the Lydia Mills community.

The Laurens County Coroner's Office said 59-year-old Tommy Etters died Sunday morning after being shot twice - once in the lung, and once in the chest.

Clinton Public Safety Department officials said the officer was not injured.

Neighbors told FOX Carolina that there were gunshots heard near the area prior to the shooting, but the shots were coming from another part of Lydia Mills. Authorities said officers were in the area investigating those shots around 4:30 a.m. when the incident happened.

According to the incident report, an officer came across Etters and told him to put his gun down several times. The report said there were three shots fired before there was a call of "shots fired, subject down" over the police radio.

FOX Carolina spoke with Etters' daughter Sandy Odom on Sunday.

"He called me at 8:30 and all he kept telling me was he loved me, and now I'm not going to have that again," Odom said, adding, "I'm never going to be able to pick up the phone and call my daddy, ever. I have called his phone so many times today, praying to God he would pick the phone up."

Clinton police said that South Carolina Law Enforcement Division investigators are investigating the shooting, which is standard procedure in officer-involved shootings.

Clinton Public Safety Department Chief Crystal Roberts said the officer was Trey Lewis, who is on paid administrative pending the conclusion of the department's internal investigation.

Roberts said Lewis has been employed with CDPS for about two years and was previously an officer in Ninety Six.

According to Roberts, this was Lewis' first officer-involved shooting, as well as the department's, in at least 10 years.
